Have you ever seen your bird puff up, suddenly looking 'fatter'? This phenomenon, known as fluffing up, might indicate sickness. Similar to humans getting goosebumps, this is caused by the action of arrector pili muscles related to hair follicles. These muscles make feathers stand upright due to a reaction to adrenaline and sympathetic nerve excitement, typically in response to fear, sudden cold, or other emotional changes.
However, unlike goosebumps in humans, fluffing up in birds is a serious health warning sign. It may indicate an advanced stage of illness, termed as non-specific clinical manifestation. Given birds' small size and larger surface area to body weight ratio, they can quickly deteriorate when sick. Pet owners should provide a stable, safe environment to prevent emotional stress and observe their bird's behavior closely. If fluffing up occurs, contact a veterinarian promptly.
